Uplifting a red light

I was at a red light on El Camino Real and I looked to my left and saw a man who looked like he needed some uplifting. I reached for my battered up laughter sign and held it up. I peeked to see his reaction. he held his hand and gave a lukewarm reaction, and then more of a thumbs up. that's what we want. he rolled down the window and said, "I'm going through a challenging time. "
